More About Lumpectomy

Lumpectomy, a form of breast preservation therapy (a partial mastectomy), is a surgery that only removes the tumor and some of the surrounding tissue. Following the lumpectomy, all of the tissue that was removed is carefully examined to see if there are any cancer cells present in the normal tissue bordering the tumor, if cancer cells are identified in the edges extending out to the fringe of the breast tissue that the surgeon removed, your lumpectomy specialist near West Palm Beach, Florida will carry out additional surgery (referred to as re-excision) to take out the remaining cancer.

After the lumpectomy surgery, the hospital staff will monitor your blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature and Dr. Rimmer will stay in contact to make sure everything is taken care of. In most cases an overnight stay at the hospital is not required unless you're also having lymph nodes removed.

Most patients receive between 5 to 7 weeks of radiation therapy following a lumpectomy in order to eliminate cancer cells that may possibly be present in the remaining breast tissue. The pairing of treatments is called "breast conserving therapy". If chemotherapy is required as well, the radiation therapy will come into play after chemotherapy.
